I chose this as my first single because it caused such a diversity of opinion in my old band, some loved it, some really fucking hated it.
I wanted to do something more mainstream, and the idea of it being a love letter to playing live, I thought was fitting. So I held on to it and decided to use it as my launch.
It's still kind of an unusual song for me, but I love playing it!
Dreams started with an acoustic riff I had been messing with for years. It was a great opening but it took a good while to finish the rest of the song, especially the lyrics...
Then, I ran across a quote from the movie, What Dreams May Come; "Soulmates. It's extremely rare, but it exists. Sort of like twin souls tuning into each other. Apparently, even in death."
Having been lucky enough to understand this deep connection, and the havok it sometimes wreaks, I was off to the races.
It's a fantasy with deep roots about a feeling you wish would last forever.
Burn is just that, a not so fond farewell to my old band.
I had a lot of fun in that band. A lot of great firsts in my career were made during my time there and I have a lot of great memories.
But, inevitably, things started unravelling, some of it my fault, most of it not.
I realized that it had to end. I was growing as a songwriter and railed against being pigeon-holed by someone else's vision.
It was time to go...
The Fool is the direct result of a nightmare vision of a future gone mad, of a present slowly sliding off the rails, of a past from which nothing has been learned....
I wrote it so the listener could copy and paste their own private fool into the hellscape and maybe take a second to figure out where we came from and how the hell we got where we are....
